ABOUT ART IN PENALLT

Art in Penallt is an annual, three-day event in the village of Penallt, near Monmouth with the aim of stimulating interest in and enthusiasm for the artistic process and to showcase the work of local artists. With an exhibition of high quality, contemporary work, a makers’ market, art demonstrations and a full day workshop, the weekend attracts large numbers of visitors.

A wide variety of art & craft forms is offered for sale with all profits (once expenses are covered) given to charity.  We are proud of the fact that we have, since 2010, donated over £20,000 to our chosen charities.

A rigorous selection process ensures a high standard and a broad range of exhibits to suit all tastes and sometimes to challenge. Applications to take part far exceed the space available so difficult choices have to be made. We are always looking for exciting new artists to complement established favourites like our Patrons Walter Keeler, Richard Wills and Alex Brown.

The organisers are all local volunteers, ably supported by an army of stewards who ensure that Art in Penallt runs smoothly. Close links have been forged with the three secondary schools in Monmouth and with Made in Monmouthshire, a co-operative of artists & makers.

At the heart of Humble by Nature is the beautiful old Long Barn which houses the fine art exhibition with outdoor sculpture displayed in the garden. A colourful range of stalls fills the Lambing Shed and a full programme of art demonstrations takes place in the Greenhouse along with an exhibition of work by recent contemporary design craft and artist blacksmithing graduates from Hereford College of Art.

For those who want hands-on experience, there is a day-long art workshop in nearby Pelham Hall. An exhibition of work by art students at Monmouth schools takes place throughout the summer holidays in the Pig & Apple.

So, there is something for everyone to enjoy, to be inspired & delighted by works of art, to stock up on unusual cards or to invest in an original painting or sculpture, to watch artists at work and to learn more about the creative process, to start Christmas shopping at the artisan stalls and then to take a break at the on-site café with a delicious salad, coffee or home-baked cake. All on a traditional working farm & rural skills centre, high above the Wye valley & home to pigs, geese, hens, goats & donkeys.

All details for this year’s event, taking place 18th - 20th August 2023, will be found on the Programme page, once finalised.
