10.30am - 12.30pm Steve Roberts - Oil Painting (auction to follow)

Demo Title: Colour and Unity. Steve’s demo will give some background context to colour theory and then demonstrate this by painting a still life. The demo will be open format, encouraging questions throughout. Steve plans to pass around a few small studies, a value scale, palette, and colour theory materials during the demo.

Steve will give a brief overview of who I am and the type of landscape work he does, sharing his stripped-back approach to colour theory and showing that you don’t need an in-depth knowledge of colour theory to create harmony within your work. He’ll give a brief explanation of what value is and explain that this is more important than colour to create the illusion of form. (I’ll pass around a value scale and then some small still life studies as an example of how value translates into readable form). A brief explanation will be given of warm and cool colours and a walk through of the colours on Steve’s palette. A few very quick sketches will be made to understand the composition and balance of forms for the painting, showing how this is an important step to take before painting. Steve will also cover elements of painting including: Ground Colour, Drawing with paint, Maintaining abstraction throughout, Mixing one colour into another, Not trying to match colours but mixing an equivalent and The importance of referring to the scene but not copying it exactly.

1.30pm - 3.30pm Tania Bryan - Ink & Watercolour Painting (auction to follow)

Tania will be demonstrating the use of inks and watercolour to create an intuitive and atmospheric artwork inspired by her illumination collection which was previously on show in Art Padova, Venice, Italy in 2022 with Context Gallery. The illumination pieces are mixture of abstract forms and bright pigments that reflect light. Viewers often say the pieces resemble land, sea and sky, however, Tania doesn't set out with a particular subject matter in mind and work purely through play and experimentation of marks and washes which then lead to purely authentic outcome. Tania will create a beautiful and very individual piece that you can watch develop as she demonstrates some of her mark making techniques.  When the piece is complete it will be signed by Tania and donated to auction on the day.

Sunday, 20th August 2023

10.30am - 12.30pm Felicity Robinson - Brush Marking/Mark Making

Make your Mark!: Experimental ‘brush’ making with organic materials

The demonstration explores the practical and experimental use of natural and found materials to create mark making tools. Using these ‘brushes’ artists can achieve a fascinating range of unexpected marks, offering new possibilities for abstract and representational work. This approach encourages artists to think creatively and venture beyond traditional brushes, resulting in unique textures and marks that enhance their artistic expression.

1.30pm - 3.30pm Alex Brown - Still Life in Oils (auction to follow)

Alex will be demonstrating the painting of a small Still Life - Flowers in a jar/ vase of water with fruit and jug.  The focal point will be the water with the drama of light and the counter points will be the flowers, fruit and jug.

A painting needs a focal point and counterpoints, and Alex will talk about this and how he tries to achieve this as the painting progresses. The way in which he paints the water in a vase or jar will be the star of the painting, and key to the composition will be the arrangement of the other objects, along with the light to create drama and light in the water.
